FREE Veggie Seeds
Yes, you really can request free heirloom seeds for your garden without entering payment information. Free Heirloom Seeds distributes heirloom and open-pollinated seeds to gardeners, with requests supported by donations and available program resources.
We’ve shared this program before, and it is still operating. But the request instructions can change, so don’t rely on an old list or an old set of directions. Always read the current instructions on the Free Heirloom Seeds website before submitting your request.
🌱 How the Free Seed Program Works
Free Heirloom Seeds maintains a changing list of available heirloom and open-pollinated seeds. Depending on availability, you may find vegetables, herbs, flowers, grains, and other plants on the current list.
For a request without a donation, choose the seed codes for your first five choices from their current list, along with ten backup selections. Your choices need to be listed according to the site’s current instructions.
The program strives to provide five packs for properly submitted no-donation requests, although availability and the varieties you choose can affect what you receive.

🌿 Read the Current Instructions Before Requesting
“The available seed list and request instructions can change, so always use the current information on the Free Heirloom Seeds website.”
📬 How to Request Seeds Without a Donation
The no-donation program does not require payment information, but you do need to follow the organization’s request instructions carefully.
At the time of this update, requests without a donation are submitted by email. The email subject line needs to say “No Donation,” and the recipient’s complete name and mailing address should appear first in the body of the email.
Below the address, list the codes for your five primary seed choices in alphabetical order. Then provide ten backup selections, also in alphabetical order.
Do not copy the full plant descriptions into your request. The organization asks for the seed codes so volunteers can process requests efficiently.
🌻 A Few Things to Know Before You Request
Free seeds are subject to availability. Requests without a donation are filled when the program has the resources to do so, so this isn’t an instant-shipping freebie.
The organization currently limits no-donation requests to one per address per year. Some large or bulky seeds are also more expensive to ship and may be less likely to be included in requests without postage support.
Their available seed list changes frequently, too. Refresh the website before choosing your varieties rather than working from an old saved list.
🌾 Why Heirloom Seeds Are Worth Growing
One of the wonderful things about growing heirloom and open-pollinated varieties is the opportunity to save seed from your own garden for future seasons.
Seed saving does require a little learning. Some plants cross-pollinate easily, while others are much simpler to keep true to variety. Free Heirloom Seeds encourages gardeners to learn about proper isolation and seed saving so today’s free packet can potentially become many future generations of plants.
Whether you’re trying to stretch the garden budget, experiment with a variety you’ve never grown, or begin saving some of your own seed, this is a fun resource worth exploring.
Just remember: this is a small seed-distribution effort rather than a conventional retailer. Read their current rules, choose varieties you’ll actually grow, follow the request format, and be patient while volunteers work through requests.
